[GM]Dave Wants Your Opinion

Yes, you read that right. I'm looking for your opinion on this one.

No, no. I don't want your opinions about WoW, Twilight, or whatever other thing you're just waiting to give me your thoughts on.

Actually, it's about theme week.

As several of you have e-mailed to point out, it's time for another fan pack. It's been about a month since the last one and people seem to be getting a little anxious about getting them.

I waited a little longer this time because I don't want people getting sick of them.

Now, as a lead up to the fan pack, I was going to do a theme week as chosen by last month's highest donator. We spent a fair amount of time discussing various topics, but she just couldn't make up her mind.

She decided that the best way to handle this situation would be to put the choice to you.

This is called the "pussying out" method.

I kid, I kid.

Her two choices were between:

a) Turnabout is fair play

I would have to start a new character in FFXI with absolutely no help from any of my in-game friends. They're not even allowed to know it's me.

I... I can't even use my GM powers.

The idea is to review FFXI from a new player's perspective as I reviewed WoW. By removing as many of the biases as possible, could it put my WoW experience in a new light?

Note: I will still be taking names of players who aggravate me and, when the week is over, I will deal out retroactive vengeance.

OR

b) The worst things I have ever done

This would basically be seven days of the worst, most terrible things I have ever done either in-game or out.

From my precocious childhood to the guy I punched in the face for trying to sell me a Used copy of a game that cost $5 new, which of my terrible deeds would rank among the worst?

There are so many. It's hard to choose just seven.

So, basically, the comments section of this post will act as a simple poll. 24 hours from now, I will read the comments and the theme for this week will be chosen be popular demand.

And, as usual, anyone who donates $5 or more to help support the blog will become an instant member of the official [GM]Dave fan club (applause here). One week (-ish) from today, a brand new fan pack will be sent to all members of this very exclusive club.

Membership also includes your choice of novelty hat when the revolution comes and my plans for world domination come to fruition.

Do you really want to be the only one without a hat? Do you really?

I should point out that anyone without the aforementioned hat will be busy toiling in the spice mines.

All proceeds go towards the care and feeding of the biological weapons installation that my wife and several blood tests confirm is my child.

The person who donates the most will be given the opportunity to participate in the blog in a way of their choosing including (but not limited to) story ideas, writing your own post, telling me how much I suck, having someone killed, or giving a counterpoint to one of my reviews.

Note: All counterpoints are the opinion of the person writing them and, in the case that they disagree with the opinion of [GM]Dave, are patently wrong.

You even get to pick your very own theme for an entire week's worth of posts.

Or... You get to let everyone else pick your very own theme for an entire week's worth of posts.

Whatever.

I'm very open to the opinions of others.

Note: [GM]Dave is not open to the opinions of others.

How could you ask for anything more?

Remember, if you act now, you'll be done faster than if you acted later!

What are you waiting for?

... Seriously. What are you waiting for?

Now, as I told my wife on our wedding night, "LET THE POLLING BEGIN!"

...

Yeah, she didn't find it funny either.

2 sounds like it has a lot of potential compared to 1.

Yep, going with the 2nd one.

At 10:08 AM, Blogger Meeka said...

That is a tough choice. While I'm sure Dave has done some evil things in his life which I'm also sure would make me laugh and give me ideas for future vengeance plots... the first option is perhaps even more evil. Make Dave play his beloved game with none of the advantages he's used to. That could be very entertaining. Just picture Dave being beaten up by bunnies with no one to complain to and no way to exact revenge on those cute fluffy little demons from hell.

Number one ONLY if it includes accepting pearl to Newb linkshell. Otherwise-number 2.

Yeah, gotta agree. 2 sounds like the most interesting option here.

I vote for number 1. I lost my account recently and had to start from scratch again (got my account back though, thank god) and it was not fun . . . It was the opposite of fun. But since its common knowledge that the suffering of others is some of the funniest stuff out there . . . Number 1 for me.

1!

I also think that the character should be made on a different server to the server you usually play on.

At 11:13 AM, Blogger Calamarth said...

Option B without a doubt.

At 11:27 AM, Blogger Taylor-MadeAK said...

Turnabout! TURNABOUT!

No, seriously, I'd love to see what kind of hijinks would ensue if [GM]Dave were forced to play through Noobie Dunes again.

At 11:39 AM, Blogger Unknown said...

Dave, seriously, option #1.

I had an idea a little over a year ago, an experiment if you will - "What would it be like to start over as a brand new player, on a different server, without any of my gil, gear, experience, or resources? Would the game be harder or easier - would it just be a boring grind?" I talked to some of my friends, and they thought it sounded fun, so we embarked on that little experiment. We're originally from Gilgamesh, all endgame players with at least 3 jobs at 75, but once a week (give or take) we play new characters on Lakshmi. We have a blast with this. We took jobs to 20, then a different set to 40 - now we're doing some missions and quest lines, then starting on the jobs we want to take to 75.

If you want to see the sorts of things we're up to, and the things we've learned about started over as new characters, look at The MoG Squad.

#1 wouldn't really be unbiased -- Dave's too familiar with FF to see it as a newbie would if he starts over. I've run into that with WoW, in starting new toons on other servers with no backup from higher-level chars and guildies; it still goes a lot faster because you KNOW what to do, where a newbie doesn't.

So...#2.

At 12:21 PM, Blogger ineedbettername said...

B for the win. I'm sure you've done some very entertaining things over the years that some "closed-minded" people would see as mean.

At 12:29 PM, Blogger Kaminiwa said...

#1! Turnabout! :)

At 12:34 PM, Blogger Unknown said...

#1 - AND, just like he did with WoW, he has to play the worse class.

At 12:37 PM, Blogger Cullen said...

Since you've already done a post of 'Your worst deeds', if I am indeed recalling correctly. I'd prefer Option one, play a FFXI character with no help, levels 1-10. It even makes WoW look fun in my opinion...

At 12:40 PM, Blogger Cullen said...

Oh also, should you do option 1. You should be a WHM with no subjob, have fun. :)

At 12:47 PM, Blogger Unknown said...

#1.

At 12:49 PM, Blogger Unknown said...

Option 2. I have more affinity with real life.

At 12:56 PM, Blogger Unknown said...

I choose option 1, new character! I wanna see [GM]Dave weak and powerless!

At 1:10 PM, Blogger Unknown said...

Second one

#1...this is going to be one hell of a week...

While I have enjoyed many of [GM]Dave's non-FFXI posts, I'd love to see him write more about the game. I'm sure [GM]Dave has done some very horrible deeds in FFXI, but to be on the safe side, I vote for the first option.

At 2:06 PM, Blogger RSS adder said...

I'd throw my vote for #2.

#1 would be interesting, but [GM]Dave has already written about some of his newb experiences before and it might be somewhat of a re-hash.

Turnabout is fair play would be my choice.

At 2:33 PM, Blogger secretpandalord said...

Definitely #2. I want to hear all the mean nasty horrible things you've done in your life. I need some new ideas for doing mean nasty horrible things in mine.

At 2:45 PM, Blogger Totema said...

2 is the only one that makes sense. Making a new character does not make you a new player.

At 2:50 PM, Blogger Thalandor46 said...

The first one definately sounds more appealing to me

At 2:58 PM, Blogger Akiva said...

I'm of the mind that the the first option is the better of the two. I started a second character on a server that I knew no one on and I'm curious to see if your experience is anything like my experience.

At 3:00 PM, Blogger ~G said...

#1. Make a character on Siren, let me know the characters name, so I can tail you and laugh.

At 3:44 PM, Blogger Kinam said...

I'd say #1 (Turnabout) ... on a couple stipulations ... you must roll up a tarutaru, start off as a WHM. Must be on a totally different server than anyone knows you on, so you can't even think about abusing your friends ... IF for any reason while out in the dunes, a party that you end up joining, has a power-leveler, you must DISBAND and seek a party that isn't getting PL'd ... claim it as "I want to learn to play, not limp along other's skills" ... oh, and no level synching parties, unless the synch is to you...

I'll go with option 2. He's done some VERY bad things in his life but ot know the WORST would be soooo much better. Cuz there's a big chance he would still cheat on the #1 option and act like he's following the rules ^^,

Wich one gets picked I'll enjoy it a lot!

He can't even get his phishing virus post in ENGRISH to at least try to tempt us to click on his crap.

(for those that missed it, it was a long long virus-link-laden post in Chinese characters.)

I like the idea of number one (1) though I think he should play a Mithra WHM, its pain in the butt class and he will have to deal with the being hit on by lonely teens, lol.

So:
Mithra
WHM
Different server
No PL
Random Invite Linkshell
Only Sync to you

#1 ftw.

Hey, [GM]Dave. Love your blog, it owns most everything. (I say this because, Chuck Norris, in fact, cannot be owned.) Anyways, I'd definately like to see the 1st one. Mainly because your violent and cruel, regardless of the environment you end up in... which is cool. S'yeah. Put me down for the new character thing. Besides, right after the week of [GM]Dave purgatory comes a mass killing of unexpecting idiots/jerks/innocent bystanders. =D

At 10:31 PM, Blogger Saifer said...

Go #1 !

At 11:52 PM, Blogger S-Dell said...

If you do choose the first option, won't you also have a chance to set an example for the other new players? Like how to not be a retard.

At 12:22 AM, Blogger TENinchNAILS said...

2 Would be fun. I don't think Dave would like to play the Dunes all over again. Harrowing experience the first time, the second just blows.

At 12:54 AM, Blogger Unknown said...

Turnabout. Why? We need more FFXI goodness. Not enough lately; I miss Jormy. But I want him to play on the server he's on now. I think it would be fascinating to see how Dave acts around players he knows...without revealing his identity. Plus, we might get an entry later about them getting fed to a dragon!

At 12:59 AM, Blogger Pirre said...

I vote for b)

At 1:32 AM, Blogger Alex said...

sigh, 1 is going to sadly win, but I'll throw another 2 in there...

At 1:41 AM, Blogger Shadowdancer said...

Option 1, just to see if you can make it.

At 2:53 AM, Blogger Unknown said...

Definitely two. As has been said, you're intimately familiar with the game so it wouldn't really be 'new'... And you've written about your newb experiences in the past.

At 4:31 AM, Blogger Robin said...

Number two.

harr harr, oh the humor.

At 4:40 AM, Blogger WATHB-1 said...

#2 for sure

At 5:24 AM, Blogger Bufuman said...

I like the idea of the first one, simply because Dave will have to find newb party members that will hopefully induce enough rage to bring back the angry, wrathful Dave of ancient FFXI lore. And what he'll do after he gets his GM powers back...

At 5:44 AM, Blogger Mike Ridley said...

Choice one, please.

At 6:17 AM, Blogger Unknown said...

a) Turnabout is fair play

At 7:26 AM, Blogger Cidolfas said...

My vote for number 2! I also don't think starting as a newbie would really be unbiased given how much Dave already knows about the game.

At 7:30 AM, Blogger Luis said...

#1

No gil, no gear, no subjob, no outpost teleports, Final Destination!

Even if the game was made simpler to start out in (it will be even simpler with FoV everywhere by the time Dave starts), a fresher view could be interesting.
There's a lot or prior knowledge Dave is already armed with, but some early game challenges like gearing up and getting the subjob items with little to no outside help could provide an interesting story or two at least.

No starting in San d'Oria though - that's the simpler path to the Dunes/Selbina.

At 7:35 AM, Blogger Unknown said...

1 hands down

Hey Dave,
Long time reader, first time poster - love your blog!

Definitely voting for option a) Turnabout is fair play. Not only because I think it will be great reading about how much of a pain it is to start over again (I have done it a few times), but it will be great reading about Jormy eating everyone who pissed you off during the week, too. :)

Gogo option A!

At 10:33 AM, Blogger Kiwi said...

I vote for the first option. Take a look at FFXI from a new players perspective.

I say number one.
And you need to be a taru or a mithra.

Also, that chinese post is funny as hell. Most of the links are, well, not pg-13.

I think you should start anew, as much as hearing your worst deeds sounds entertaining. You should join a lot of different LS if you do though, so you can experience THE PEOPLE you meet... live and in a newbie's position.

I favor option 2.

Option 1 wouldn't be turnabout, [GM]Dave has too much experience to really see FF through a noob's eyes. Also, option 2 just sounds more interesting.
